The southern portion of India share many cultural similarities which are quite distinct from those of the parts of India further to the north.
Most languages spoken in the south are from the Dravidian family, entirely unrelated to Hindi and Sanskrit: Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu.
Food in South India is also markedly different to food further north.
