Jul 31, 2016 at 20:35 | comment | added | LLlAMnYP | It's a difference, but not critical. I invited "just friends" also. Of course, my relationship with them is also substantive, but isn't really verifiable in terms of a paper trail. I think, the "good faith" part is more important.
Jul 31, 2016 at 18:48 | comment | added | Gayot Fow | @LLlAMnYP good answer +1, and others are voting also. It's great to have lots of experienced people giving answers and helping out. Take note that a critical difference in your situation is that you and your gf had a substantive relationship built up in the real world :) it matters
Jul 31, 2016 at 17:17 | comment | added | LLlAMnYP | Done. But this case is problematic for reasons mentioned in my answer. Even I don't believe, the OP is acting in good faith, what are the chances, that officers at the consulate will?
Jul 31, 2016 at 15:53 | comment | added | Gayot Fow | @LLlAMnYP Great! You should put in a new answer below explaining the Verpflichtungserklärung and how it works; it could be really helpful to people coming to this page for help.
Jul 31, 2016 at 15:31 | comment | added | LLlAMnYP | Your answer is somewhat inaccurate. Reservations and itineraries are not strictly necessary, esp. for Russian citizens. They have the option of a visa with flexible dates, implying that they won't really have a fixed itinerary until they get the visa approved and proceed to buy the flights. It's long overdue now, but the OP mentioned that he won't "formally invite her", unless this improves her chances, which it would - tremendously. It's a matter of going to the local Rathaus and making a thing called "Verpflichtungserklärung".
Sep 19, 2015 at 11:05 | comment | added | Aleks G | @MatthewHerbst Not at all. $10 is a lot of money for a lot of people. At the same time, it's all relative. $10 for day with food and accommodation is very little in the context of USA. Not counting actual travel-there-and-back expense, I've explored India on less than $1 per day all in.
Sep 18, 2015 at 23:46 | comment | added | Matthew Herbst | @AleksG not to make this a poverty discussion thread, but you should know that billions of people in the world today make less than $10/day, and many less than $1/day. The U.N. has good data on this. Also, $10 in 1985 is about $45 today.
Sep 18, 2015 at 20:43 | comment | added | Aleks G | @MatthewHerbst While I agree with most of your comment, I have to disagree with the "travel is not cheap" part, especially when you're talking about travel within your own country. Years ago, as a student, I did travel a lot in my own country, as well as internationally, on a very, very tight budget. About 20 years ago, I travelled within USA for under $10 per day, including food and overnight stay; travel to Canada was just a little more expensive, mainly because of the expense of getting there. It all depends on what you're after.
Sep 18, 2015 at 20:35 | comment | added | Matthew Herbst | @MichaelHampton that's very very true. There are likely many people who never even leave certain regions within their country during their lifetime. Travel is not cheap.

Sep 18, 2015 at 19:46 | comment | added | Michael Hampton | I have heard that most people never travel internationally at any time in their lives.
