Jul 20, 2015 at 19:37 | comment | added | Vince | @DanaH. I updated again my answer. In fact, the shops of terminal 2E are in the international zone so you don't actually need to cross the border. But maybe you should still cross the border to meet your friends, depending where it is.

Jul 20, 2015 at 19:25 | comment | added | Dana H. | Sorry Vince but I just saw that you edited your answer. Which border do I go to in order to enter France and proceed to terminal 2E? As you said, theres the green shuttle bus so I don't want to take that right away. Can you explain to me please the procedure.

Jul 20, 2015 at 19:02 | comment | added | Dana H. | Also the reason why I'm so persistent about this is because my friend and her daughter had a layover at CDG last week and I believe after they checked in at their gate they wanted to go to another terminal and the assistant at the gate told them they can't.
Jul 20, 2015 at 18:57 | comment | added | Relaxed | Beside having no passport, no visa (not relevant for US citizens) or forged documents, the most common reasons for being turned back at the border is that guards do not believe you meet the conditions for entry (namely having a valid purpose, enough funds to support yourself and return to your country of residence), i.e. they think you will abscond and work illegally or something like that. But shopping or meeting a friend is a reasonable purpose so there is no reason to be concerned.
Jul 20, 2015 at 18:56 | comment | added | Dana H. | So I would just go through security then? My friend will be traveling the same time as well. Thanks for your help!
Jul 20, 2015 at 18:45 | comment | added | phoog | @DanaH. The shopping in 2e is in the sterile ("international") zone. You do not need to go through passport control to shop, therefore. You would only need to do that to meet someone who is unable to get into the international zone (that is, if your friend doesn't happen to be traveling at the same time, or an airport employee).

Jul 20, 2015 at 18:41 | comment | added | Vince | yes, but the passport control will probably happen at terminal 2C, where your flight arrives.
Jul 20, 2015 at 18:41 | comment | added | Dana H. | Great! You helped a lot and made me at ease.. I was planning my entire layover on going shopping. Also one last question, after I get off at my terminal I proceed to terminal 2E and just go through passport control?
Jul 20, 2015 at 18:37 | comment | added | Vince | @DanaH. one reason that phoog gave is you overstayed during a previous visit. Other reasons include being a criminal in your own or the destination country, importing forbidden goods and such other things. But in general, there is no big worry, this is said for the principle and to remind people entry is never guaranteed, in most cases you will go through without any troubles.

Jul 20, 2015 at 18:32 | comment | added | Dana H. | Thanks! this helped a lot.. but on what basis does the border agent allow or not allow me to go through? So there is a good chance I won't be allowed ? Also does it help that my flight lands at 5:45 AM ?
Jul 20, 2015 at 18:30 | comment | added | phoog | I would also comment that I have had no trouble in the past crossing airport passport control on a US passport multiple times in one day in both France and Germany. But that was over 10 years ago.
Jul 20, 2015 at 18:28 | comment | added | Vince | @phoog, indeed, I updated the post about arbitrary border agent decisions
