Jan 27, 2015 at 2:33 | comment | added | drat | AirAsia just scrapped their fuel surcharge after the oil prices dropped. Although they have of course other reasons why they might need more attractive prices right now to attract customers.
Jan 27, 2015 at 1:04 | comment | added | Mark Mayo | Nah, that's specifically about airlines. This is about oil, with a knock-on effect of affecting airlines.

Jan 26, 2015 at 22:59 | comment | added | Vince | @mkennedy I think this article answers the question pretty well - still missing the future contracts Relaxed mentioned and that airlines most likely rely on - so I let you post an answer
Jan 26, 2015 at 22:57 | comment | added | Vince | Why isn't it on-topic? I think that it relates to the financial aspect of trip planning - without asking for an oracle prediction, nor a too open "when to fly for better prices?"

Jan 26, 2015 at 22:43 | comment | added | Mark Mayo | While interesting, I'm now sure that this is a travel question in line with the help center

Jan 26, 2015 at 22:27 | comment | added | Relaxed | Financially, hedging against such risks is supposed to be the purpose of futures contracts. OTOH, “fuel surcharges” really don't have much to do with that anymore, it's mostly about getting around rules on redeeming frequent miles and the like (otherwise, airlines could simply adjust their price directly).
