It depends hugely on the route and the characteristics of travel on that route (business/leisure/economy/advance-booking/late booking) and when passengers book and how much they're prepared to pay, and hence how many seats the airlines release and how far in advance (e.g. Europe-Orlando is ~100% leisure travel for summer and Christmas, so it gradually books months ahead, whereas London-Frankfurt is business travel). The airlines are trying to maximize revenue.
