Jan 7 at 22:49 comment added Barmar I also think it's due to the legacy of flying being a luxury. Airlines used to compete on features, not prices, because travelers were less price-sensitive. Even in the 70's and 80's, meals almost comparable to today's first-class meals were common in all classes, and they were included in the price.
