Ryokan have always been at the upper end of the Japanese accommodation spectrum, there have been and are other cheaper places to stay. Japan's best ryokan have been at it for a very long time: the two top contenders, Hoshi and Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan, date from 717 and 705 respectively. (No, those dates are not missing digits.) | |
