Apr 11, 2021 at 15:00 comment added phoog @PatricHartmann the US offers emergency passports, but only to people who are abroad and need one to return to the US. Normally, there is same-day service available for those with "life or death emergencies" at US passport agencies whereby they can get a full passport, and those without an emergency but with imminent travel plans can get a passport within three days. But some parts of the US are as far as 800 km from a passport agency (not including San Diego, as noted here), and public health restrictions seem to have slowed processing times, including for emergency service.

Apr 10, 2021 at 7:14 comment added Patric Hartmann Many countries offer "emergency passports" and other types of provisory documentation. I once needed a Swiss one (eda.admin.ch/countries/latvia/en/home/services/…) when I lost all my documents in a hotel fire in Ghana.
