Oct 26, 2023 at 17:37 | comment | added | Brian | So in retrospect, this is what happened: Canadian citizens and permanent residents were not denied entry to Canada, but they were subject to a fine if they didn't present a negative COVID PCR test taken within 72 hours before arrival.

Mar 23, 2020 at 14:36 | comment | added | Mast | "Wouldn't this be illegal/unconstitutional" Entire countries are going in lockdown, state of emergency declared. In the current situation, a lot of things are legal that wouldn't have been otherwise. Please keep that in mind.
Mar 23, 2020 at 13:29 | comment | added | J... | @Crazydre This applies only to people returning to Canada from abroad, and only for 14 days following their entry to the country. Many (most) jurisdictions in Canada now will apply fines and/or jail time to people who violate this self-isolation requirement when arriving from abroad.
Mar 23, 2020 at 13:24 | comment | added | Crazydre | @J... Wow, Canada is more rigorous then - nowhere in Europe are you told not to even go to the supermarket

Mar 23, 2020 at 12:42 | comment | added | J... | Whatever you do, if you do get back, please, PLEASE obey the 14-day isolation requirement. That means you go directly to your house and do not leave for ANY reason for the following two weeks. If your home does not have sufficient supplies for you to stay that long you MUST arrange for someone to bring supplies to you. Do not leave during your isolation period!
Mar 22, 2020 at 22:13 | comment | added | emory | @phoog I am not disputing that. Denying Canadians re-entry may or may not be legal, but that is different from OP's question "will Canadians be denied re-entry".

Mar 22, 2020 at 16:18 | comment | added | phoog | @emory in general, restrictions on the right of free movement are permissible if they are in the service of public health. If Canada does not have the capacity to admit and quarantine returning citizens, then a decision to refuse entry to Canada could in fact be legal and constitutional.
Mar 22, 2020 at 15:25 | comment | added | emory | I think under the circumstances no one - not even PM Trudeau - much less people on StackOverflow knows the answer to this question. There are going to be lots of illegal/unconstitutional things happening in the near future. Personally, I think you should avoid unnecessary travel and hope for the best.

Mar 22, 2020 at 1:32 | comment | added | user105640 | The Canadian Government travel advice specifically advises Canadians to return to Canada. I suspect somebody in the CBSA is taking things a bit too literally.
Mar 22, 2020 at 1:28 | comment | added | Kate Gregory | What is your status in the US? Do you have somewhere to live? What is the reason you want to return now? These things are part of whether it's essential or not...
