Jan 6, 2020 at 7:31 | comment | added | DavidRecallsMonica | There is no sterile, airside, international transit anywhere in the US.

Jan 5, 2020 at 22:02 | comment | added | Hilmar | @MattDouhan: Detroit to Toronto is not domestic. Detroit is in the US and Toronto is in Canada. Both countries have no concept of international transit (which is rather annoying).
Jan 5, 2020 at 17:30 | comment | added | DavidRecallsMonica | @bob You will be able to do this. Because the US requires you to go through US Immigration and Customs (regardless of further destination) at your airport of first US arrival, you'll deplane in Detroit, go through US Immigration, pick up your checked bags, then go through US Customs. After passing through US Customs, you'll be in the US. The airline will expect you to return the bags to them, and board the Detroit > Toronto flight. As has been noted, however, you're in the US then, and may just leave the airport directly and make your way home.
Jan 5, 2020 at 14:23 | comment | added | vidarlo | @bob you should be able to grab it in Detroid, since you have to go trough immigration. For most other countries in the world, this would not be the case.
Jan 5, 2020 at 14:16 | comment | added | bob | @vidarlo. so if I have checked luggage, I won't have an opportunity to get it until I get back to Toronto? Will I be able to grab it in Detroit?
Jan 5, 2020 at 10:32 | comment | added | vidarlo | US airports doesn't separate domestic and international departures, so probably yes.
Jan 5, 2020 at 9:51 | comment | added | Matt Douhan | @vidarlo US to Toronto is not domestic he has to take luggge?
Jan 5, 2020 at 9:44 | comment | added | vidarlo | He's flying into an US airport. That means he'll have to pick up luggage and clear immigration. Informing the airline could lead to threats of extra payment... If you don't check your luggage and simply don't show up, it should not hold up the next departure.
