It was by far the most touristy place I've been to in Sri Lanka (in 2013). Restaurants were generally more expensive and the food quality often lacked (compared to some other places we've been in the country). But that's just my personal experience. Everybody likes to travel different and it probably isn't a bad place to get used to the country on a basic level.
