Poorly worded part I hadn't noticed before.

May 16, 2018 at 19:01 | comment | added | Willeke♦ | When traveling in Japan, using hostels I would call ahead, spell my name when asked, give my nationality when asked and when I arrived my name was never to be found but my nationality was always enough to be recognized. I bet your first name/nickname is more personal than a nationality. (But it worked for me and I would do it again.)

For the most part, Japanese are extremely accommodating people and will opt to just use whatever is most comfortable to you. I wouldn't worry too much about formality of your name. Kozaky-san is just as formal as McDonald-san in all but the most regally official situations.

May 14, 2018 at 16:03 | comment | added | DTRT | Is it possible to use a nickname or short version that has a more direct spelling->pronunciation factor? Like instead of Catriona, use Kate or Cat.
