Dec 31, 2017 at 9:02 comment added Patricia Shanahan @o.m. I meant not raising the issue of residence. I agree the OP should put the visa application in the context of a planned and almost complete program of study.
Dec 31, 2017 at 8:07 comment added o.m. @PatriciaShanahan, he should certainly mention that he has completed the Canadian part of an international studies program and needs to go to Austria next. That looks like a much better position than going to Austria from a cold start.

Dec 31, 2017 at 0:14 comment added Patricia Shanahan Your best strategy is probably not to raise the issue at all. You are in a country where you have a right to live permanently, with no intention of living elsewhere other than for one term of study in Austria.
Dec 30, 2017 at 21:05 comment added Nidhi K @phoog That makes perfect sense. I'll add it to my cover letter. Appreciate the assistance!
Dec 30, 2017 at 20:58 comment added phoog An application in Canada would have been impractical as you would not have been able to submit it before the beginning of December. You might not have received your passport back in time to leave Canada. The application must be submitted no more than three months before the trip. See bmeia.gv.at/en/travel-stay/entry-and-residence-in-austria/….
Dec 30, 2017 at 20:01 comment added Nidhi K @phoog I intend to be there from March 1 to June 30.
Dec 30, 2017 at 19:47 comment added phoog When do you plan to go to Austria?
Dec 30, 2017 at 19:34 comment added Nidhi K Thank you @user16259 . I do agree that it would be absurd to go back to Canada just to submit a visa application, but I was concerned that they might question why I didn't just submit it while I was still in Canada in the first place (this was an oversight on my part; I didn't know at the time that there was a residency requirement, and I assumed that as an Indian citizen, I could just apply once I was back in India).
Dec 30, 2017 at 19:28 comment added user16259 You were resident in Canada and you have already returned to India? Yes, you're an India resident. Your alternative is to fly to Canada to approach the Austrian embassy there which would be absurd.
Dec 30, 2017 at 19:26 comment added phoog Since you have no plan at the moment to return to live in Canada, it seems that India is the logical choice. Given your circumstances, I'd be very surprised if the consulate in India were to reject your application.
