comment How to not forget things?
Same as @AnthonyGrist , but I use Google Keep, the prevalence of digital checklists and smart devices has made this much easier than keeping a checklist was in the past!

comment How is the duration of stay is calculated?
I think you may possibly be confused about the duration of stay part, since you imply your total allowed duration is 17 days. Unless you have already used up some days on a previous visit, this is unlikely. Can you double check your paperwork to find the exact wording of what the actual duration allowed to you is? (What often happens is that they ask how long you plan to stay, e.g. 17 days, and then issue you a short stay visa which allows you to stay up to 90 days regardless, so minor travel changes are no problem.)

comment I just entered the USA without passport control at Atlanta airport
@DeanMeehan Yes, it's worth pointing out that while most of the preclearance locations are in Canada and the Caribbean, there are also a few locations elsewhere (Ireland and the UAE). cbp.gov/border-security/ports-entry/operations/preclearance

comment Why does there seem to be an extreme lack of public trashcans in Taiwan?
Slightly related, I just read this article about the (lack) of trash cans in Japan... in Japan's case, there was a terrorist attack using trash cans. citylab.com/life/2019/05/…

+1 for mentioning that the OP may now have trouble on the return as well.

comment What is an efficient way of planning solo-trips with so many unknowns?
@Neeku -- Satisficing. You pick the first acceptable one that you find (coming up with some criteria for acceptable, such as price range, reviews, location, etc.)...or come up with some other similar algorithm. I read of someone who always filtered Amazon products to show only four star or higher, and then picked the second cheapest that fit their needs.

comment What is an efficient way of planning solo-trips with so many unknowns?
You spent too much time on steps 1-5, not leaving enough time for steps 6 and 7. You don't need the best hotel, ski resort, etc., you just need an acceptably good one...aka "satisficing". If you can get to step 6 much earlier, then you will find out about any problems (no transportation) and resolve them in time.

comment How do North Americans use toilet paper?
@AlexanderMatrosov It feels like if you crumple it does a better job of getting into any crevices or wrinkly areas (speaking as a woman).....If you fold, it just kind of skims across the top.

comment Should I declare chocolate as “food” when entering the US?
Well, even "chocolate" in the form of Kinder eggs could be verboten (the real kind, not the imitation we have).

@DarrenH Hopefully now you always leave enough room for the person in front of you to get back onto the induction switch...

comment Is it possible that the return ticket of a round-trip is counterfeit?
@Acccumulation "maybe". But (speculating a bit) you would probably also face charges in Jamaica before you go, and they would put a black mark on your passport which would probably make it very difficult for you to travel after that.

comment Is two hour delay sufficient to demand compensation from the airline?
Also--doesn't "return to gate" still leave you stuck on the plane (just with the plane at the gate, instead of on the runway)?

comment How to get from Washington Dulles Airport to Charlottesville?
Some out of the box thoughts here--check prices for rerouting to DCA (Regan/National) instead, at least it's more convenient for trains... Or even better, fly to RIC (Richmond) and take Greyhound to Charlottesville.

comment Can I buy only the wine glass in the Munich Christmas market?
@Tor-EinarJarnbjo You can keep leftover plain cups and reuse them, or use them for whatever other food service thing you want, plain cups work for anything. A cup that says "Christmas Market 2018" doesn't "work" next year.

comment Can I buy only the wine glass in the Munich Christmas market?
@Tor-EinarJarnbjo IF the cup is a souvenir cup that could be sold back, the normal response here would be to switch to plain cups and put up a sign, "Souvenir cups sold out".

comment What does this control do on new airplanes?
@user568458 Convenient in the case where the plane is not very full (admittedly does not happen often these days, and generally not on the fancier planes anyway) and a passenger has closed the shade in another row which is empty (e.g. on the opposite side of the plane)...since there is no passenger there to open it, and the passenger who originally closed it would have to get out of their seat to open it.
