You're just guessing, and in this case you're wrong. Turkey requires visas for British and US citizen's alike (pretty much anybody actually). It's not hard but these have to be requested in advance of arrival.
I agree with this on principle —and the previous commentor noting these clazy fluctuations can be currency issues— but there is one piece of information this answer doesn't cover and that is the "three rooms left" advertising. I've run into a number of hotels doing this and it's fundamentally dishonest. I would likely bring this up in any discussion with the hotel asking for their good will in offering me the current price.
This is all spot on, except only some of the T1 trams will be labeled for Bağcılar, some of them only go as far as Zeytinburnu and will be labeled as such. Either way they will work. From the Galatya area any tram going the right direction will get you there.
You can usually stay inside the the international terminal at the ataturk airport and not worry about visas. They have transit arrangements that do not leave security. On the other hand 17 hours is enough time to see the city, are you wanting to get out and about?
