Transit visas are most often needed for air travel when changing planes that use different airports in the same country in order to get to another country.

But the international airports in some countries do not keep airside passengers separate from everybody else and may require you to obtain a transit visa even if you will not leave the airport.

There are also cases where a transit visa may be issued so that a visitor can pass by land or ferry on their way to a neighbouring country.
