A Scots city on the River Clyde in the West Central Lowlands.
With a larger population that Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh on the East coast, the two are rivals. Glasgow has two main train termini, Central and Queen Street, and the third oldest underground metro system "Subway" in the world. For buses the main terminal is in Killermont Street (Buchanan bus station).
The city is served by two airports: International (GLA, was Abbotsinch) about 10 miles from the city centre and Prestwick (PIK) about 33 miles from the city centre.
Glaswegians may speak Glasgow patter (Glaswegian) a distinct dialect that can be difficult for others to understand.
The architect, designer, water colourist and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who influenced Art Nouveau, was born in Glasgow on 7 June 1868 and spent most of his life there.
