I will be spending about 3 months (at least) in Berlin, Germany, primarily to look for some business opportunities or maybe a job. I am aware of the nearly perfect transportation services Berlin offers (S-bahn, U-bahn and buses). I am considering bringing my car with me, however it will cost me about 5 times the money for the trip than what I would spend for an airplane ticket (about 200 for airplane, about 1000-1200 for car trip).
Has anyone experience with living in Berlin? Given the fact that I don't yet know exactly where I will be staying, and where I will be needing to be going on a daily basis for my work, how much benefit would I gain from having a car there? Or maybe it's not worth it?
P.S. the car is new and complies with the latest European emission standards.
UPDATE (2020) - This is an old question, but still gets some attention, and since I now live in Berlin, I would like to add my current experience. IMHO, bringing a car to Berlin makes sense in one occasion only: You have a family AND you live in the suburbs / outside the city. Fact is that Berlin offers ample opportunities for getting around. From a fairly well organized public transportation system, to a variety of car sharing options. Renting a car for a day or two is not expensive either. Car insurance is quite expensive in Germany, especially if you are a new driver or you have no clean accident record. Maintenance is also fairly expensive. Parking situation is awful in most of the inner city parts, although you will also find many parking houses, but they are more expensive than parking on the street, naturally. So here is my advice: check the available public transportation routes and how they will suite your commutes (you can easily do this on Google Maps) and have a look at car sharing services (ShareNow, Miles and Sixt for example) to see if the pricing and available use areas suite you.
And a small tip: As stated below, if you absolutely must bring your car, make sure you get the mandatory green sticker asap, which indicates that you can drive in all environmental zones of the city, as you will be fined for driving without one.
In any case, also check the answers below, as they provide some other insights as well.
