We are (4) travelers flying from Charlotte, North Carolina (Lufthansa) to Munich, Germany then on to Pisa, Italy. All will have carry-on bags only. Is 1 1/2 hours enough time to get through customs in Munich?

  • Is it all on one ticket, or is it two tickets? – Gagravarr Jun 21 '14 at 16:54

It should be enough, see travel.stackexchange.com/questions/12765/… Note that you won't go through customs in Munich, only through an immigration control (Schengen entry stamp). – Relaxed Jun 21 '14 at 16:54
  • Also, you'll need to clear both Immigration and Customs, they're different – Gagravarr Jun 21 '14 at 16:56

Customs in European airports is generally very quick, just a matter of going through a special door, unless you have something to declare or unless they suspect you of something. Passport control is generally pretty quick as well.

There's also the possibility that you'll have to be re-screened for security. The only info I could find is really old, but suggests that there's no re-screening at Munich: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/practical-travel-safety-issues/1587052-airports-require-you-reclear-security-international-transit.html

I'd be more worried about possible delays of the first flight than about time to go through the formalities.

Also take a look at http://www.munich-airport.de/en/consumer/aufenthalt_trans/airportstop/minconntime/index.jsp - they talk about 30 / 35 minute connections. (By the way, are you connecting within the same terminal? This is something to consider as well).

Obviously, I wouldn't buy two separate tickets that are so close together, but as long as both flights are on the same reservation, I think you should be ok.

Answering an exact duplicate is not very helpful. – Relaxed Jun 21 '14 at 17:44
  • It wasn't marked as duplicate when I started writing the answer. Even if I did know it was a duplicate, it's not a reason for a downvote IMHO. – Eugene O Jun 21 '14 at 18:52
  • I see. Nothing personal but a downvote ensures that the whole question will be automatically deleted. – Relaxed Jun 21 '14 at 19:57
