As a non-Burmese citizen, do I have to blindly pay the Bagan Entry Fee (25k kyats in November 2019, a.k.a. tourist fee or Bagan Archaeological Zone fee) when I exit Nyaung-U Airport (NYU) (near Bagan, Myanmar), or does that depend on where I am heading to?

  • It sounds like you should, but also that it is possible to avoid it. What penalties are levied if found to have evaded paying I have no idea. – simon at rcl Nov 22 '19 at 15:48
  • @simonatrcl thanks, where did you read that one must pay the fee regardless of where one is headed to? – Franck Dernoncourt Nov 22 '19 at 15:49
  • Simple googling 'Bagan Entry Fee'. This also shows me that you only have to pay it if you actually entry the zone. If you're just changing planes, or going somewhere else in whatever way from Nyuang-U and not entering the zone then you don't. (I'm not putting this as an answer as it's all found from a simple web search, and then non-governmental i.e. not authoritative web sites.) – simon at rcl Nov 22 '19 at 16:02
  • @simonatrcl Thanks, yes some of those pages were of doubtful quality and/or assume that the visitor will visit the historical sites. That's why I'm asking here :-) – Franck Dernoncourt Nov 22 '19 at 16:03
  • Are you asking out of need (as it were) or to get a categorical answer on the site? If the latter I apologise and delete my comments! – simon at rcl Nov 22 '19 at 16:16
