This is a general question about the Schengen Visa. I am an international student traveling from Washington DC to Rome with a layover in Lisbon for an academic conference. My question is that should I apply for the Schengen Visa through the Italian Embassy or through the Portuguese embassy. I checked that I do not need a transit visa for my layover in Portugal. A friend mentioned that I might have to apply for the Schengen visa through Portugal since that is my port of entry into Europe. However, since my conference is in Rome, it makes sense to apply for the visa through the Italian embassy. I am a little confused. Any insight will be appreciated.
