Recently, while preparing for my trip i booked a car in Romanian car rental company. After booking, they send me an e-mail, asking me to send photo of my ID and driving licence on unprotected channel (e-mail, they wont accept encrypted archive).

I guess i would be ok with writing down my data, but direct copy seems too much for me.

My question are:

  1. Is it even legal in EU? (I am EU citizen for that matter)
  2. Does anybody know car rental company in Romania that does not require making copy of my documents?

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because part 1 belongs on Law and part 2 is asking for a product/service recommendation, which is off-topic here. – David Richerby Aug 10 at 10:17
  • Sorry, i thought this is appropriate site for this. – paffciu Aug 10 at 10:24
  • I’d tell them that for data security reasons you will provide this information when you pick up the car. – Traveller Aug 10 at 10:24

@David Richerby It’s worth asking, rather than assuming they will say no. I’d check their booking T&C, and if I was still worried about security I’d search for another rental company that doesn’t require this information upfront. – Traveller Aug 10 at 11:02

I will ask for identity confirmation on site. – paffciu Aug 10 at 11:33
