Aug 8, 2017 at 16:05 comment added Willeke While people in small towns with hardly ever a tourist might not have their English handy, the percentage of people who have learned it is as high as in Amsterdam. Give them a moment to adjust and they will happily use their English or if not good enough, direct you with hand signals.
Aug 27, 2014 at 8:31 comment added Ashalynd My own kids who grew up in NL learned English even before they started getting official English lessons (they could speak it quite confidently and read books at the age of 9-10 years without any efforts from our side). I am not a native Dutch speaker though (but on the other hand, our home language is not English either).
Aug 27, 2014 at 7:25 comment added jwenting the main reason is that English is mandatory for ALL children for several years, and most tend to take it as an elective topic after that until highschool (equivalent) graduation.
