comment Bringing a camping knife to Japan
While this doesn't really answer the question, this has been open to long and I will go ahead and accept it. I was asking for more personal experience in the topic.

comment China visa issue
@Wenzi This is not an answer, I am aware I do not need a Chinese visa to go to Taiwan. Please read my question more clearly. Yes, at the time I had an extendable 3 month reentry visa. You clearly do not know much about Taiwanese immigration. You can fly through GuangZhou to China according to an agreement at the beginning of 2010 allowing 'cross-stright' flights. They made me take a visa to fly thought China to Taiwan. This doesn't answer anything.

comment Visit the UK with Schengen tourist short-stay visa
UK has opted out of signing the Schengen agreement. However, this is an interesting question... if have a Schengen grants a landing visa.

@Abarax indeed. Although they are legal, what you can get through customs and what is legal in a country are two different things.

comment Is it necessary to take malaria pills when travelling in South India?
I would also recommend picking up some DEET-based mosquito repellent. I wouldn't recommend using it over long periods of time as there has been numerous reports of long-term health effects, but for a short term trip, it is amazing.

I have been in traveling around 'malaria areas' a lot. I have never gotten malaria and only took pills for a short time out here. Doxycyclene isn't bad, but some of the pills make you feel horrible.
