comment Camping facilities in Yellowstone and Grand Teton
You're asking someone who was last there 20 years ago, and who was focused more on how fun the roads were :-) (and to be honest, they weren't much fun within the park boundaries). I would start with the tourist things; it really is amazing to watch Old Faithful, especially with the afternoon sun behind it. There are a lot of hikes that aren't that far from the road, and get surprisingly few visitors. And the whole area is just amazing in terms of scenery and emptiness, especially if you're from the East coast (or any more-populated area).

OK, so generally "touristy" things (albeit a bit more active than the typical Yellowstone tourist -- be prepared to be depressed). In that case I'd suggest Idaho Falls, which is two hours away and has enough major roads converging that I'd expect it to have a good population of "Days Inn" style hotels. There's also Jackson WY: I remember grabbing an end-of-day hotel room there on a motorcycle trip 20 years ago, for under $50, but Googling just now showed "budget" accommodations for $150+. In either case, reserve a room before you go.

What are you planning to do while in the parks, and how close are you to them? Day-trips are certainly possible, and you might find lodging on an interstate within a couple of hours.

comment Am I supposed to pay for parking when the parking meter is buried under the snow (USA)?
I would be amazed if you can even find a space. Helpful hint: if you move a lawn chair or other improvised obstruction from a space, do not expect your car to be drivable when you return.

comment Traveling in the USA with a Samsung Galaxy SM-G900F: how good is the AT&T coverage for the 1700 and 1900 frequencies?
To add to this answer: AT&T made some network changes in the northeast US at the end of October that caused 4G phones to drop calls. This thread can provide some more info/rants. So a non-AT&T phone might not be able to use 4G anyway.

comment toll cost for my trip
A better question might be: is it safe or reasonable to drive a U-Haul truck on a route that follows US-4 through Vermont to NY-22 to US-20? Or should I stick to the interstate all the way?

Your question, as asked, could be answered by simply plugging your two points into Google Maps and then going to the states involved to see what their toll rates are (ie, any answer that you get here would simply be outsourced basic research).

comment How far can you realistically travel across potentially rough water in an inflatable dinghy?
I'm going to add a general caution that, unless you have extensive experience and are in superb condition, solo paddling is not advised. I realize that one mile doesn't seem like much ... until you're fighting a contrary wind. Of course, it's entirely possible that both of you will get blown into the North Atlantic.

+1, and I'll add two points: (1) the shape presents a lot of resistance, and (2) assuming no rigid structure, and oar-locks glued to the gunwales, a lot of energy will be dissipated before it ever gets to move water. Both of which make paddling a blow-up dinghy a painful experience.

comment Where is Steinbeck's “Salinas Valley”?
Since a picture is equal to 1,000 words, and assuming that the path was via Route 66 to El Camino Real, here's what the view would be as you leave the mountains: maps.google.com/…

comment Where is Steinbeck's “Salinas Valley”?
Remember that Steinbeck was describing California from the perspective of people who had watched their farms destroyed, and then spent a long journey through arid, sparsely-populated lands. Their idea of "beauty" and a "land of plenty" might be very different from yours. Unless, of course, you like agriculture.

Have you considered FedEx/DHL/other air express service?

I'd suggest contacting the airline in advance. They might have some ways to expedite the process. Of course, you might also get an airline rep that doesn't want to deal with you. If using a travel agent, they might also be able to help.
