comment What happens when you book a flight to a country you don't have a visa for?
Not just Visas - I have been turned away from check-in when I did not need a visa at my intended destination, but I did need proof of an onward journey, which I did not have. Difficult situation in airport at midnight, with all booking facilities closed.

comment In the context of air travel, are layovers different to stopovers?
You say you have taken Layover from US TV. I think this may be the cause of some of the confusion. It is my understanding that the US (unlike every (?) other country) has no official concept of "in transit" foreign passengers. Officially your destination is considered to be America even if you never leave the airport; and have to go through immigration (and customs (?)) even if this is going to be all you see of the States.

comment How best to prevent data loss while travelling?
This does overlook the elephant in the room mentioned by @Sylverdrag. No technology no matter how awesome is going to help if you are in a town (as I was last trip) where the whole town relied on one dialup line and all the Wifi systems relied on that one line. Speeds were atrocious, and if the line went down (which it did on average 1/day) connectivity throughout the town was lost.
