comment Is it possible to environmentally offset long-distance air travel?
@gnasher729: let's take what EPA classifies as mid-size car, Cadillac CTS. According to EPA it's got fuel economy of 14mpg in combined cycle. That's 17L/100km. Even if you divide that by four, you're still burning more fuel per passenger-km, than in a jet. B747-8 does 2.75L/100km/passenger (86mpg/passenger). As for the buses, they're mostly running way below capacity, thus really they're at 54mpg/passenger on average

actually if you look at carbon footprint of modern airliner, then it isn't much higher than car. In fact it's lower than car with a single occupant. IIRC for B777, it comes to fuel economy of less than 3L/100km per passenger. No full-size car gets anywhere near that kind o fuel economy. Just for your consideration, one of GreenPeace's top execs commutes via air from Luxembourg to Amsterdam.

comment Why is security screening done at the gate at AMS (Schiphol airport, Amsterdam) in the non-Schengen area?
This doesn't explain why the difference for Schengen vs non-Schengen. Especially given that passport control is centralized.

"Is this typical in other European airports?" Not that I know of. I've see ones with centralized security for all (eg. Madrid-Barajas), as well as per-gate security for all (eg. Zurich).

comment Watching the football World Cup final in Amsterdam
Linked articles don't provide accurate information about semi-finals though. Fact is „The one on the Museumplein has been removed and will not return unless Oranje reaches the final, and other borough councils have refused to licence outdoor screens. Supporters will have to head for the Arenapark.”

comment Which meals are served on long flights and in what order?
On that route KLM serves like 2-3 full meals plus number of snacks. It's way too much. Meals are rather generic, so it's hard to say if it's considered "lunch" or "diner".

"Do not go out to the city of Lima in the night"? Lima is large city, as in any city there are places when you shouldn't be at night, but OTOH there are lot of places where people enjoy nightlife (for example Barranco or Miraflores).

@dbkk: as I've wrote, depends on consulate. OTOH, I know of people from non-EU countries (Latin America or Eastern Europe), who had experiences similar to mine.

comment Travelling to the US with codeine-based medicines
I thing problem here isn't whether it's prescription drug or not, but the fact that codeine is narcotic, and as such by the Controlled Substances Act, your pills are most likely considered Schedule III drugs

comment Renting apartaments for less than month in Europe?
@Annoyed: First hand I know of that requirement in the Netherlands and Spain. In both cases you can get shorter contract, but it's kind of in gray zone, it won't be official rental contract. As far as I know other European countries have similar laws. In theory they are to protect tenants, in practice they are to protect hotel industry.

In many European countries rental contract for period shorter than 1 year is not even legal. Anything shorter falls under similar legal requirements as hotels.
