comment How unsafe is it to leave an expensive laptop at a rented apartment or a cheap hotel room? Which precautions should I take?
@exizt: this video is really on how not to lock your laptop. :-P Unless the table is permanently attached to the floor, one could just take laptop, put it under the table, getting slack on the loop and take the loop off the table foot.

comment Where can I get a student ID in Poland (Wroclaw) using my American Student ID?
Railways are major PITA. I've had problem when bought tickets for my family. Cashier asked how old my son is (10 at the time) and gave me what I thought was the correct ticket. But then in the train the conductor said it's not valid, because he's not attending Polish school. I had to pay a fine. Apparently there are two kinds of discounts, one base on age (33% IIRC), other based on attending school (50%).

comment Are there limited term identification cards in the UK?
@Annoyed: I was under impression that these were somehow related, and IDs for non-EU families of EU members were one of the pilots for general ID programme. Are residency cards still issued?

comment Does condition 8115 mean you can't check your work email?
@badp: In that case you should mention in the question, that they've got business visas, not tourist ones.

@HaLaBi: also seems that working remotely full-time for employer outside of Australia would be illegal too: "An applicant who wishes to continue to work online, basically full-time may be of concern in terms of the genuine visitor requirement and should be considered carefully."

@HaLaBi: not necessarily, for example if you'd travel as consultant to work with client on behalf of your company, you'd wouldn't find job locally in Australia, but you'd be still working in Australia. This is legal gray issue, AFAIK, generally not acted upon. Another similarly gray-zone example are mother-companies sending their representatives/auditors/etc to local subsidiaries.

comment Is it safe to visit Peru?
Safety is always relative. Generally as a European I'd consider both US and Peru unsafe. OTOH, San Francisco area (OP's location) - 13 murders per 100K, Peru - 10 murders per 100K.

comment How can roadside cafe quality be measured in Greece or Turkey?
Depends on your definition of "quality", there seems to be correlation with how elaborated the food is, but a simple grilled shashlik served with bread and cabbage salad might be better quality, than some more elaborated food.

For sure safer than US, where US citizens actually do get kidnapped.
