comment Do you have a GPS signal on board of a plane?
@RicardoGiaviti: planes internal systems also use GPS. So do some missiles guidance systems. And these fly way faster than any plane.

comment Ridiculous and unreasonable taxes for used electronic devices in europe
@chx well, I find whole situation ridiculous. I travel with laptop, value of which well exceeds the limit. So does the mobile phone. And DSLR. Obviously I don't carry any kind of paperwork for them, because I'd assume we're in democratic countries, rather than some high-security prison. I've never heard of anyone being asked to pay VAT except in cases that the device was clearly brand new, still in it's original box.

"you should have declared these items the first time you brought them to Europe" — isn't there exemption for single device of each type for personal use?

comment How safe is public transport in San Francisco for a female travelling alone?
As for BART, I feel there is quite heavy police presence. There is dedicated BART Police.

Wouldn't the stations mentioned simply be the ones with most on/off traffic?

@MarkMayo MH17 and IR655 are not that dissimilar.

Assumption that "the terrorist" are the danger is wrong. What's real danger is overflying US military, which might end like it did for Iran Air flight 655

comment How accurate is Google Maps for travel times?
"it's assuming you can drive at basically the speed limit all the time". From my experience it seems like it's assuming you're driving slightly over the speed limit.

comment Duty exemption for non-resident aliens
@Clément: all visas, except EB- types, which directly grant green card, are "non-immigrant visas". Including dual intent ones such as for example H1. Anyways, staying for few semesters is out of scope of this site (it's not traveling) and within the scope of Expats site.
