The email they received did not mention Visa condition 8101, or I would've asked about that one.

lol, don't trust Google Maps: coverage is very very spotty. This is certainly one way to go from Milan to Bergamo, for example, but I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.

The idea is that not all trains get checked. If you don't stamp your ticket and no one checks you, you've effectively traveled for free. That's obviously not good for the train company.
