Though I've always lived in Finland, I have travelled a fair bit in Europe (about 28 countries*) and a little elsewhere too (namely in Cuba, Costa Rica, Panama, Argentina, Australia, Thailand, Mexico, and USA).

*If you count Georgia and the European part of Turkey as Europe :-)

Most of the time, I'm into a style of travel that involves backpacking / making few plans in advance / staying in hostels or couchsurfing.

comment Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua
Just my 2¢: Yes, Costa Rica has more tourists than Panama. But it is easy to travel independently and avoid too "packaged" stuff in CR too, if you wish. (Parts of Panama (namely Bocas del Toro) actually felt less "authentic" than most places I visited in Costa Rica.)

comment Traveling developer in South/Central America
Regarding hostels, you can browse reviews on e.g. Hostelworld—if the wifi is really crappy, often someone has mentioned it. Other than that, don't pay for more than one night in advance if you don't know what the facilities are like :) If the wifi turns out dysfunctional, it's usually easy to change to another hostel.

comment Are there places where it isn't legal to take a taxi that isn't in the front of a line?
Yeah. While not illegal, in Finland the (not-first-in-line) taxi driver would likely refuse, and direct you back to the front of the line. (Here pricing is exactly the same in all taxis, and pretty much all the cars are quite new, so normally it does not matter at all which taxi you take.)
