comment Where is the quietest place on Earth?
Deep caves are probably the quietest naturally occurring places on earth, since there is no wind and no animal life. If you don't want to go on a caving expedition, the alpine zone of a mountain range can be extremely quiet when there is no wind; as with caves, these places are quiet because they're basically dead.

comment How to check a large backpack?
Some airports do not make these bags available for this purpose. An example is Geneva, where they have the bags, but there are environmental rules saying that they can only give them out for car seats, not backpacks. What has worked for me in general has been to buy a roll of packing tape and use it to wrap up all the loose parts of the pack.

comment How is the range of Google Maps new drive time feature defined?
From experimenting, it looks like the bottom end of the range never changes, no matter what date and start time you put in. Therefore this seems to be the time with no traffic, and if you put in a date and time when it's rush hour, then there may be zero probability of getting there that fast. As an example, I put in this route goo.gl/maps/GzABo , and IMO there is zero probability of completing it in 35 min during rush hour.

comment Can food from Indian restaurants in America be found in India?
India is a huge, multicultural country. There are probably many different regional cuisines.

comment San Francisco to Los Angeles: bus or plane?
I've taken the Coast Starlight a couple of times. It was fun, but it was expensive, it often arrives many hours late, and even if it arrives on time, the time may be inconvenient.

comment Do any States in the US give traffic tickets for 5 mph above the speed limit?
Certain towns are known as speed traps. Here in California, two examples are Los Banos and Placerville.

Yes, but often with a sense of irony.

comment How do you know if Americans genuinely/literally mean what they say?
I'm an American who grew up in small-town California and lived most of my life in big cities in California. I think this is not even a rural-vs-urban thing but just an individual thing. Some people have 700 facebook friends and do air kisses. Others are gruff and plain-spoken.

comment Do Nepalese authorities care about Everest climb fairness?
@NikitaSokolsky: Yes. Even with oxygen and acclimatization, most people traveling to 8000 m can barely function, there is a risk of acute illness, and the body rapidly deteriorates.
