I like to cook, and I love my CSA. I write about those things on this little blog.

comment Cheapest season to go to South Africa from North America
I flew NYC - Johannesburg direct for just over $900 round trip last March (on South African Airways). It was fall in South Africa, which is apparently the low point for tourism, and the weather was amazing (70s-80s F during the day, 50-60 F at night, not a drop of rain). The best way to take advantage of low fares it to look early (I bought my tickets ~4 months in advance, I think) and buy the cheapest class (i.e., non-refundable economy class).

comment Rooftop bar in Manhattan?
Oh yeah, I totally agree that getting dressed up is not necessarily relaxing. Just pointing out that the first statement in your answer is inaccurate - you might not recall bars having dress codes, but there definitely are a lot of them in Manhattan. Whether or not they're worth the trouble is a different question. :)

comment Rooftop bar in Manhattan?
There are some bars that have dress codes - those codes are usually something along the line of no jeans, and men must wear collared shirts. But loads of others have "unofficial" dress codes and have bouncers who have sole discretion over whether you're dressed acceptably and attractively enough. A lot of times there isn't any way to know other than to try, though.

comment Can you tell a cabbie which route to take?
@Karlson In NYC, the only fixed price airport route is between JFK and Manhattan. To other boroughs or other airports is by meter (unless you're going outside city limits, in which case you negotiate a fixed fare in advance). nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/taxicab_rate.shtml

comment How to find farm type stays / internships / volunteering other than via WWOOF?
Thanks for asking this as a separate question. I don't have any information about this type of program other than WWOOF, so I'm definitely interested if anyone else can share!

comment How to get from Bodrum to Datça when ferry isn't running?
You mention that the ferry will probably be available in September, but I'm going in October - is there any way to confirm whether the ferries will run then? If I take a bus from Marmaris or Mugla, is it necessary to book in advance at that time of year?

comment Are there small group day trips from NYC to Boston?
Yup, that works, just wanted to make sure I was understanding you properly. Would you be willing to consider separate tours in New York & Boston (as opposed to one tour guide who arranged the whole thing), or is the convenience of one planner essential?

Are you looking for a trip that includes transportation and all of your activities? Or just transportation? Or just a guide in Boston? Some more details would be helpful, as there are a lot of transit options, and it's easy to put together your own itinerary for Boston.

@Scholar Be sure to leave an answer here if the international scholars office gives you information different than the answers already provided here! :)

comment What's the most comfortable way to travel with 2 backpacks or bags and a DSLR camera?
I also have a Deuter pack with the extra breathing room. It's awesome. +1 for a pretty comprehensive list of options.

comment What is the SHORTEST commercial passenger flight (with a flight number) in the world?
@Doc the Guinness Book of Records stamp in the screenshot says "shortest scheduled flight" and the Wikipedia excerpt has the flight number.

comment What can I use instead of a corkscrew?
+1 for just buying wine with screw tops. I just got back from South Africa, and almost every bottle I encountered was screw top. There are wine traditionalists who probably abhor that, but it's definitely becoming more common.

comment Which are the best airlines for travelling with infants?
@Karlson Hmm, strange. I hadn't realized that a single airplane model could vary in its seating capacity and arrangement by as many as 20 rows or more!

comment Which are the best airlines for travelling with infants?
@Karlson That plane you linked to is not an a340-600. (I know it says it is, but I just flew on one two days ago. That China Eastern one might be an earlier a340 model.) SeatGuru has the correct diagram for the South African Airways one (which is what I flew). seatguru.com/airlines/South_African_Airways/…

comment Can I visit vineyards in Stellenbosch without booking a tour in advance?
We ended up just driving to Stellenbosch Tourism, and the woman there was great. She pulled out a map, circled her favorite places and told us a little about each one. No booking in advance, no dealing with bus schedules - it was great!

comment How do I find out whether I am allowed to / have to disembark from a flight that transits at an intermediary airport?
Oh, interesting. I've never had a stopover of that length before; they're usually several hours (4-6, where you clearly change planes) or 30 minutes (like the one from Kochi to Delhi via Bangalore). I'm really curious about this now, I'll do some more investigating. :)

Just wanted to report back that I haven't been able to find any site that aggregates this information. And I haven't tested enough airline websites to be 100% sure that it works the same for all of them. Will definitely keep an eye out though!

I will do more research and if what I described above seems to be true, I'll make that comment into an answer. But for now, it's just mildly helpful but somewhat inconclusive anecdotal evidence. ;)

I believe if you MUST disembark or change planes, the airline's website normally says on your itinerary "change planes". I've had that happen on US flights (Continental, US Airways) within the US, as well as other airlines abroad (flying Delhi to Paris via Dubai on Emirates, for example, my itinerary said "Change planes" in Dubai.) If you don't have to change planes, it won't say anything. I flew Kochi to Delhi via Bangalore; the plane stopped to let people off and on, but passengers continuing to Delhi weren't allowed to leave the plane. So my itinerary just showed a stop, not a plane change.

I'll have a car, so transportation shouldn't be an issue.
