Cheapest season to go to South Africa from North America I flew NYC - Johannesburg direct for just over $900 round trip last March (on South African Airways). It was fall in South Africa, which is apparently the low point for tourism, and the weather was amazing (70s-80s F during the day, 50-60 F at night, not a drop of rain). The best way to take advantage of low fares it to look early (I bought my tickets ~4 months in advance, I think) and buy the cheapest class (i.e., non-refundable economy class). |

Rooftop bar in Manhattan? Oh yeah, I totally agree that getting dressed up is not necessarily relaxing. Just pointing out that the first statement in your answer is inaccurate - you might not recall bars having dress codes, but there definitely are a lot of them in Manhattan. Whether or not they're worth the trouble is a different question. :) |

Rooftop bar in Manhattan? There are some bars that have dress codes - those codes are usually something along the line of no jeans, and men must wear collared shirts. But loads of others have "unofficial" dress codes and have bouncers who have sole discretion over whether you're dressed acceptably and attractively enough. A lot of times there isn't any way to know other than to try, though. |

Can you tell a cabbie which route to take? @Karlson In NYC, the only fixed price airport route is between JFK and Manhattan. To other boroughs or other airports is by meter (unless you're going outside city limits, in which case you negotiate a fixed fare in advance). nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/taxicab_rate.shtml |

How to find farm type stays / internships / volunteering other than via WWOOF? Thanks for asking this as a separate question. I don't have any information about this type of program other than WWOOF, so I'm definitely interested if anyone else can share! |
