comment RV'ing in Canada - where can you stay to get facilities?
I'm sorry. Getting robbed at walmart is surely a more economic and interesting experience to recommend than staying at nice place... ಠ_ಠ

I have to disagree: Walmart car parks are possibly the worst places to stay overnight. link

comment What's a good way to generate solar electricity while driving?
@hippietrail: The engine might not "know" (and doesn't need to) via electronics how much energy is taken from the Alternator. However the more power you drain from the Alternator, the harder the engine has to work turning the Alternator, using more petrol. So yes, there is a (mechanical) feedback from the Alternator for the engine to work harder. I thought there was a physics.se to discus this very topic; no?

@Roy: this is plain wrong. The power from the Alternator is not "just there" but has to be generated by the engine first. The more power you take away, the harder the engine has to work. If your 90 Watts for a laptop power supply really make much difference at a 160kW Engine is another question :)

How much power does your laptop need? Most of them are between 150 Watts (upper class) and 60 Watts (netbooks); but you would need quite a large panel to charge that - not something you could fit in your pocket or just park on your dashboard.

comment Why is car rental in the US so much cheaper when booking from outside the US?
Yeah i am a bit skeptical too - the usual rate for cars in NZ/AUS is ~USD50/day for the cheapest option (small car, no extras). Some places advertise their cars much cheaper, but if you ask they usually tell you it's only for long-term rentals >1 month.

comment Tourism after the Earthquake in Christchurch
One of the Motels on Bealey Ave. The commercial area between Montreal St. and Victoria St. was pretty depressing, and the city center was closed.

You could try to attach a large, friendly sticker: titanic-magazin.de/shop/… It says "certified security" :)

comment Would renting a car in Basel, Switzerland be safe for a foreigner?
Why do you want to rent a car in Switzerland? It has the best rail system in the world. And don't expect the cities to be particular car friendly. Either the parking is not very central, or they charge you for it.

(warning, joke ahead) UK has recently switched to 0118 999 881 999 119 7253 - please don't use the old number anymore! youtube.com/watch?v=ab8GtuPdrUQ

comment Book multiple flights with Ryanair and save on Administration Fee
Come on - it's not an "administration fee" they want you to avoid. It's a marketing gag to split the fare into different smaller parts with different names, so they can advertise with "A to B for GBP 19!" while you still pay GBP 60 for the seat. Take the train for inner-country trips in europe. It's usually not slower, but you can travel city-city and you wont be stuck on a small airport in the middle of the countryside, 60km away from advertised "B" :)

Agree. It's an interesting math or programming challenge, but not really travel related...

comment The Great Wall of China: Where should I start a visit?
youtube.com/… "It;s not a great wall; it's an alright wall. It's the alright wall of china..." Also, the part you see on the pictures (or any parts of the wall with a tourist entrance) have been rebuild - the original wall looks pretty desolate since it wasn't maintained for a few hundred years at least.
