I've been working with map projections and datum transformations for years, including in ArcView GIS, ArcInfo 7 and up, MapObjects, and ArcGIS.

comment Duty exemption for non-resident aliens
Have you been in the US more than 5 years? If so, you're considered a resident for tax purposes and possibly also for the customs/duty exemption.

comment Affordable Taxi Service from BUF Airport to Niagara Falls on Canadian side
@KateGregory Motor vehicles cross borders all the time. The cab website says they can transport someone in Canada.

comment Vehicles required/allowed in weigh stations on US interstates
Admittedly this was 20 years ago, but I went from Ohio to California in a 21 or 24-foot Penske truck. At the first weigh station, we pulled in, and they basically said, 'get out, and don't stop at any other weigh stations'. They were...unamused.

The fastest way to Las Vegas from LAX doesn't go anywhere close to Silicon Valley. Are you spending extra time on holiday?

@GayotFow She wants to be able to show an approved UK visa when applying for a US visa.

comment May I re-enter UK on a marriage visa that is about to expire?
UK website says that you must leave the UK by the end of the visa. Even if you do get married by the end of the year, do you plan to overstay the visa? That could cause problems later on.

MULT = multiple entry. Visas can be for a single entry, or for multiple entries within the valid time frame of the visa. If your visa doesn't state that it's a multiple entry, you may already be out of luck.

@hippietrail You've never brought homemade or unpackaged cookies or similar in your checked luggage? I have. Several times I've brought freshmade, preservative-free bread. That certainly wouldn't have lasted a week, let along over 21 days!

Yep, whenever it rains here in sunny soCal, it's like most drivers have forgotten that it ever rained before! Check out SigAlert and I recently read a column that was very flattering about Waze.

comment How do I book a one-way rail ticket from Tokyo to Toyota City?
If you're arriving at 16:35, you might think about staying overnight in Tokyo. 1: Kodama trains take 3 hrs from Narita to Nagoya. 2. I'd guess at least 2 hrs to get into Tokyo from Narita. 3. Check carefully train/subway schedules in Nagoya--by the time you arrive, it'll be late if you go straight from Narita.

comment Speeding tickets in the US (CA, AZ, NV)
Traffic cameras in the US that automatically ticket are usually for illegally using toll/pay lanes or running a "red-light" or not coming to a complete stop before turning right on a red light, not for general speeding.

You can use apps on cell (smart) phones as long as the phone itself is in "airplane mode."

@neubert I think that's a booth at a university's career fair, not at an industry conference. Slightly different context...!

comment Why does it take so long to check in at the airport?
I definitely think it's software-related and some airlines have better designed ones than the others.

Don't forget to look at rodent or other small animal cages as a possibility. I used a mouse cage to transport a finch across the US (by car) and as a general transport cage.
