I've been working with map projections and datum transformations for years, including in ArcView GIS, ArcInfo 7 and up, MapObjects, and ArcGIS.

comment What artsy/museumy/culturalish stuff is there to do in Indianapolis?
Do you have car access? Like planes? There's a huge aviation museum at Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton (2 hrs away).

comment Are there hotels where children are not allowed?
I think you're right; that it's only for permanent housing ("family status"), but it would likely still cause an uproar if the hotel wasn't a very high-end resort or a tiny B&B.

comment What is the LONGEST passenger flight (with a flight number) in the world?
"Longest" flights are always going to include crossing the equator. Once you have to do that, you can't take advantage of a near-polar route.

Love it! I may have to try that.

comment Where can I stay with a pool in room in north east USA?
An exercise/lap pool (with or without one of those motors that you swim against) or bigger? Can it be indoors or outdoors?

comment Why does the TSA allow two 3-ounce containers but not one 6-ounce container?
When I later looked at the TSA site that @nate-eldridge linked to, TSA said that 3.4 oz / 100 ml is adequate for a short trip. So knowing people really complain if they can't take anything, this is the smallest reasonable amount.

comment Places to be seen
Honestly, how is this different from travel.stackexchange.com/questions/3586/… ? Although that question includes a time limit for a visit, it's otherwise completely open-ended.

comment Driving into Germany over Easter weekend
Doesn't RyanAir (and EasyJet) have restrictive baggage policies? If you need some camping gear, that may bump the costs a bit.

comment Why would you wrap your luggage in plastic?
It's used widely in South Africa to try to minimize pilfering by baggage handlers, security, etc.

comment What affordable beachfront hotels in or near San Diego should I consider?
Temperatures are pretty uniform in southern California unless it's a protected bay, and even those are only a few degrees warmer. US NODC Coastal Water Temperature Guide: Pacific Coast: South

comment Cutting pain under eyebrow on plane landing
I had a similar pain when I flew with full sinuses. I find it's worse with short hops because the planes climb and descend much faster. In this case, it was ONT/PHX. In the US, Vicks Nasal Inhaler can help clear sinuses enough to get through the landing.

comment Can you search for a job when using a tourist visa (B-2) in the US
Speculation: 1. you've entered the country under false pretenses, 2. governments are under pressure to lower unemployment rates for people already in the country, 3. it's often cheaper in the long run for companies to hire non-citizen/non-green card which is frowned upon by the government, 4. I'm sure it's cheaper to enter on a tourist visa than on a work permit so you're gaming the systm, etc.

comment Can I drink stuff bought in duty-free shops onboard a plane?
At some airports, with the final security and liquids check before boarding, if you have a receipt from the shop, you can take the water bottle on board. I didn't get a receipt and my half-full bottle was confiscated.

comment What is the state of train travel in USA?
@Ginamin I'm sure that's one issue. My acquaintances were delayed first by freight trains. Then, because of hurricane Irene, they were told in Chicago that they could either wait 3-4 days and try to get seats onto later trains, or go to Toledo, at which point they were on their own. Their destination was Maine. They went to Toledo and rented a car. Admittedly, Irene was unusual, but their trip west included having to transfer trains when the first broke down.

comment What is the state of train travel in USA?
You can also expect long-distance AMTRAK trains (particularly those crossing the country) to be hours late. Acquaintances traveling recently from Reno to near Minneapolis were 14 hours late. Passenger and freight trains share tracks and it often seems that the freight trains have priority.

comment What organizations give computer science PhD students travel grants?
In the United States, professional organizations often have scholarships/travel grants for students. If you know about a conference far enough in advance, check with the conf committee.

comment How long does it take for a US citizen to get a visa to travel to Israel?
It looks like a US citizen doesn't need to get a visa if staying less than 90 days.
