Why would you wrap your luggage in plastic? It's used widely in South Africa to try to minimize pilfering by baggage handlers, security, etc. |

What affordable beachfront hotels in or near San Diego should I consider? Temperatures are pretty uniform in southern California unless it's a protected bay, and even those are only a few degrees warmer. US NODC Coastal Water Temperature Guide: Pacific Coast: South |

Cutting pain under eyebrow on plane landing I had a similar pain when I flew with full sinuses. I find it's worse with short hops because the planes climb and descend much faster. In this case, it was ONT/PHX. In the US, Vicks Nasal Inhaler can help clear sinuses enough to get through the landing. |

Can you search for a job when using a tourist visa (B-2) in the US Speculation: 1. you've entered the country under false pretenses, 2. governments are under pressure to lower unemployment rates for people already in the country, 3. it's often cheaper in the long run for companies to hire non-citizen/non-green card which is frowned upon by the government, 4. I'm sure it's cheaper to enter on a tourist visa than on a work permit so you're gaming the systm, etc. |

Can I drink stuff bought in duty-free shops onboard a plane? At some airports, with the final security and liquids check before boarding, if you have a receipt from the shop, you can take the water bottle on board. I didn't get a receipt and my half-full bottle was confiscated. |

What is the state of train travel in USA? @Ginamin I'm sure that's one issue. My acquaintances were delayed first by freight trains. Then, because of hurricane Irene, they were told in Chicago that they could either wait 3-4 days and try to get seats onto later trains, or go to Toledo, at which point they were on their own. Their destination was Maine. They went to Toledo and rented a car. Admittedly, Irene was unusual, but their trip west included having to transfer trains when the first broke down. |

What is the state of train travel in USA? You can also expect long-distance AMTRAK trains (particularly those crossing the country) to be hours late. Acquaintances traveling recently from Reno to near Minneapolis were 14 hours late. Passenger and freight trains share tracks and it often seems that the freight trains have priority. |

What organizations give computer science PhD students travel grants? In the United States, professional organizations often have scholarships/travel grants for students. If you know about a conference far enough in advance, check with the conf committee. |

How long does it take for a US citizen to get a visa to travel to Israel? It looks like a US citizen doesn't need to get a visa if staying less than 90 days. |
