@Zonata you saying that doesn't make it so. "America" is a name for the USA, just as Mexico is a name for the United States of Mexico and Britain is a name for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Nobody says "America" for the two continents, they say "The Americas". Canada is not part of America and it's not polite to insist that it is, either.

revised Does my duty free allowance stack with other people in my car to Canada?
a bicycle is not a motorcycle and even if the item being imported was a motorcycle it would not merit the tag

comment What is the shortest layover in Istanbul that would let me visit The Blue Mosque?
@MichaelBorgwardt does the Hagia Sophia also close for prayers or could it be open when The Blue Mosque is closed?

Does the time of prayers vary through the year? This trip is Sept/Oct. Would you have a link to when prayers are?

It would be great if your answer included those times for me. Then I could say "that's a long enough layover, but at a time when it is closed." One possibility is 3:40pm-7:35 pm, another is 2:45pm-6:50pm. They won't be in the morning just because of when I need to be other places.

comment Layovers at Munich airport Terminal 2 (Star Alliance): Do I have to leave transit area?
You get asked questions. You get looked at. And if they want to look at your checked luggage, they can. Customs and immigration people don't need your bag in your hand to guess if something is in that bag.

You go through two separate gauntlets - a booth with an officer who sees your passport, and a windy little hallway with doors off it that some people were diverted into. I believe that was customs and perhaps if people need more attention their luggage is sent up there. In many places you go through customs before you claim your bags and most people then pick up their bags and leave.

comment How do you pack your dirty clothing when moving from hotel to hotel?
I own many of these and use them when canoeing. For suitcase travelling I find them heavier and stiffer than I need, as well as harder to open and close. Basically overkill.

comment When travelling internationally with valuable personal effects, how do I avoid paying duty at each border crossing?
While "valuable personal effects" could refer to drugs, it certainly doesn't refer to alcohol and tobacco. This answer isn't relevant to this question.

Is this a smallish green card? I had one once that I listed laptops on before it was normal for everyone to have a laptop. It was really hard to get it and to get it stamped, IIRC. Allow plenty of time.

comment How useful are ExpertFlyer's/Expedia seat plan previews?
Yes - for example they might want free changes later, or more status miles, or to be able to use an upgrade instrument (generally usable only from higher fares) etc. There are always a handful of people who don't just buy the cheapest ticket possible.

Many super-cheap long-in-advance tickets don't include seat selection, so people haven't chosen a seat yet.
