comment Airline compensation for non-specific delays with a US carrier
You say you paid a premium for the flight on short notice. Was the delay so significant that the reason for going was missed? (Eg the funeral, urgent meeting or whatever happened without your cousin?) If so the magic words are "trip in vain" - in some cases people have received credit for future travel equivalent to the amount they spent on the ticket. I don't know if this applies to your cousin's situation or not.

comment Can I travel without a visa by boat from Dubai to Ireland?
I am not aware of any country in the world whose visa rules depend on whether you are entering the country by boat, plane, car, or on foot. There are some exemptions for people who are just changing planes in a country, and some exemptions for crew on a boat who don't intend to come ashore, but just the fact of traveling there by boat instead of plane should not make any difference for you.

I have heard of people leaving an old parking ticket on the windshield to keep from getting more. I guess this is the same spirit but I would be surprised to learn it worked.

comment Can you bring an empty water bottle with you on the plane?
Isn't feasible? I've lost track of the number of times I have drunk an entire bottle of water while standing on the security line. It is not a difficult thing to do.

comment If travelling through excessively cold regions, what steps should you take to keep your vehicle warm enough to drive?
@hippietrail I spend a lot of time on the workplace where it seems like half the answers are written with headings, executive summaries etc and I don't like the style or the feel of it at all. It's done even for relatively short answers. I decided my prejudice against that was keeping me from organizing this long answer properly, so I did it. I still in general dislike it for medium length answers.

comment A ticket or a receipt?
@Gilles a boarding pass is needed to get through security everywhere. But they can issue those at the airport :-)

comment Are feathers in my hat allowed through UK & Irish customs?
you might get away with it, but my guess is that real feathers from an actual bird, as untreated animal parts, would be taken by any customs agent in any country.
