comment Ocean sand and ocean water in a bottle: will it mold?
I have several bottles of ocean water (two from the first trip on which I visited the east and west coasts of Canada) and they lasted over a decade without changing appearance. However one, which had some seaweed in it, shrank and sucked the sides of the bottle in. When I opened the lid to equalize the pressure it let out a horrible stink. I just closed the lid again and kept it for years more without incident.

Consider also how warm or cool it is inside buildings. If the airconditioning is set on stun you may want a light sweater or jacket in a hot place. If heating in the winter is skimpy, and you're expected to sit by the fire, again you may want a sweater. If there is no airconditioning you may want lighter weight clothes for indoor activities than you might otherwise choose.

comment Reinstating expired MileagePlus miles
there are lots of credit cards that will give you 1% of your spend in cash, or 1 mile for every dollar, which reinforces the penny-a-point value. I certainly wouldn't pay more than a penny to get a mile. That said, I save my redemptions for times when I can get more (sometimes a LOT more) than a penny-a-point value for them.

comment Is there a bus pass for Eastern Canada?
The bus situation is kind of chaotic in the eastern half of the country. Yes, there's Greyhound, but there are other providers to, from GO (Government of Ontario, focused on commuters but used by travelers to) to private and semi-private services you haven't heard of. Even if one company sold you a pass, you might find the towns you want to go to aren't covered by that company.

comment How can I tell hotels exist that aren't on the booking web sites?
I'm less worried about paying $x to stay at hotel A when I could have paid $y, and more about not knowing hotels B, C, and D even existed.
