comment Cheapest way to get from Europe to South Africa
So why do you ask for the "cheapest" way in the title? I am pretty sure flying will be the cheapest if you add all the costs like food, accommodation etc. on the way (on top of the transport costs). Even if you don't then I wouldn't be surprised at all if flight will prove to be the cheapest.

comment What are some tricks you use to buy cheap airline tickets in Europe?
Are you always traveling from Romania? Often there are web sites specializing in tracking promotional air fares, and you can either sign up for the updates or check it while looking for the best deal. Obviously they are specific for a given country.

comment A second passport or ETD?
On a side note, I hate that you actually have to send your passport to get something done with UK authorities. Can he request to get his passport back? I thought that they would check it, make a copy and send it back if the procedure takes that long.

There is also a time limit for your travel if you are using Pay as you go Oyster (last time it affected me it was around 2h).

comment Visiting Daintree Rainforest on an budget
@MarkMayo, that's the thing - I want to pay as little as possible to see all the relevant things there. Absolute maximum would be $300 (because I have been offered a tour for $350)

Ah OK. But do I need one for Australia? Our driver licenses are NOT in English sadly.

comment Traveling through Sicily on a budget and without a driver's license
I just returned from Sicily and found the public transport to be very unreliable (the buses just wouldn't show up). Maybe its better in the summer.

comment Expiry of Miles and More (Lufthansa/Swiss) frequent traveler loyalty program award miles?
That is rather harsh! I believe in British Airways miles expire after 3 years only if you don't fly during that time.

comment Normal LonelyPlanet guides vs. the new Discover series
@Jonik, this is my first guess as well. Pictures are still nice, and I am wondering if someone tried these in practise (because otherwise its not really possible to tell if the information is adequate or not)

comment Any travel booking sites that let you search for a mixed itinerary?
I haven't even seen websites that would reasonably link flights from different providers. As an example, I was looking at flying to Korea from London, then to Taiwan and return to London. The existing websites just didn't give me a reasonable option (e.g. buy LDN-Korea and Taiwan-LDN from one airline, and Korea-Taiwan from another)

comment How to insure professional equipment while traveling
When I tried to add my camera it said: Single item has a limit of GBP £400., which is below the value of most laptops and better DSLR-s. Also this insurance seems to make sense only for people traveling for months - otherwise its ridiculously expensive.

comment Do I need a US visa to change planes in an American airport?
I agree with @jwenting 100%. Australians also have a similar procedure to apply for a visa on the Internet, they just use the proper name for it.

comment Do I need a US visa to change planes in an American airport?
Sadly I am not from a country that is part of the US visa waiver program. So you are saying that unlike in Europe, changing to a connecting flight requires passing through US immigration?

comment What rights do I have if my flight is cancelled?
I guess the airlines always interpret the conditions according to "the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided by any reasonable measure", even when they have technical issues with the plane, etc.

comment Land-based travel in the Middle East
I heard that there are no budget hotels in Oman either, but wild camping is permitted. Most people seem to hire a car there, make sure they have enough food and water and camp when they get tired. It might be costly for a solo traveler though.

Yeah, I usually do that. Unfortunately it doesn't filter based on the weather and malaria issues.
