Can I check the “in-travel” status of my Oyster card?
Contactless has a section for "Today's travel" on contactless.tfl.gov.uk/DashBoard (mobile-friendly) which shows in-progress journeys by card and with at most a minute's lag. I haven't seen anything equivalent for Oyster, though.
Can I get from Gatwick airport to London by Oyster card?
This answer is incorrect; the closest TfL bus service to Gatwick is the 405 which terminates at Redhill, 10km to the north.
Compare train ticket prices in Britain
"only the larger stations have the machines" - this seems a bit misleading; according to help.thetrainline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1437, ~1200 of the ~2500 stations have ticket machines enabled for ticket collection. I think it'd be more accurate to say that many small stations (and, surprisingly, Heathrow) don't have ticket machines enabled for ticket collection.
