What is her citizenship? I don't know a definite answer, but it may be relevant.

comment What to do without underwear on a 4 day trip?
@sgroves Not true. I follow a checklist to pack my bag. If it is not on the packlist, I will forget it. But then, I use my own checklist.

comment 5-hour wait for a bus at Frankfurt airport
@CGCampbell And in the end you have the same lunch that you could have had in the airport, but then without rushing in and out of the city. Bring a good book to kill the time

@DavidRicherby Fair enough, but as a light sleeper myself it might actually work for me...

What about the alarms that get louder in time? I think this increasing volume alarm is quite standard on modern phones. I guess it might help?

No worries, in my opinion this is perfectly on topic for this SE!

comment How significant are advance purchase discounts on Dutch and Belgian railways?
If you are from the UK, you may be surprised that there is no advance purchase discount at all (at least on local trains in the Netherlands, not sure about Thalys). So there is no difference between 2 and 3. I can't help you on the other options though.

comment How much cash am I supposed to prepay at gas station in the US?
@AndreasBonini Here in the Netherlands there are also gas stations where you enter your PIN code upfront, and the precise amount is determined after you finish. You don't need to do anything else.

comment Why do trucks pass each other on the highway?
That is exactly why you should drive 100kph with 5m apart ;) I think this is enough for here. Notify me at chat if you want to discuss further.

@The111 Be aware that in Europe, we do not have the keep your lane principle. The truck drivers are not allowed to overtake you again on the right. Of course, in rush hour all this is not really relevant anymore. And traffic waves can be prevented by keeping more space, but that will sooner initiate traffic jams as well.

But still it is no-ones but your own fault that you missed the exit. Anticipation is the key here. Either don't go to the left lane, which was not possible in this case. Alternatively, you don't really need to pass all trucks first to reach your exit. You can easily reach your exit between too trucks. When you're next to a gap, go as close as possible to the front truck (leaving as much space between you and the truck behind you). Use your blinking light. Normally truck drivers will anticape, and you can switch lanes.

@andra Benelux roads are busy, and often indeed often loaded with trucks. I also agree that braking on the left lane is really dangerous. Never do that! Cars are, in this situation typically driving with 2-5m difference, and with many cars behind you this will cause a shock wave, with peope braking faster every position further backwards, causing dangerous situations. Even gradually slowing down has that effect. On these roads you anticipate based on what three/four cars in the front of you do (or the truck), not based on the one directly in front of you, then you're too late.

comment Overtaking regulations when driving in Europe
@O.R.Mapper You are right if everybody would indeed drive as far right as possible. In reality, some people don't do that properly, and your 5-lane highway transforms in a 3-way, with traffic of four lanes having to squeeze through two lanes instead. I've rarely seen it work. On 4-lane highways, I often shift four lanes to the left to overtake someone.

comment How should you drive on rush-hour lanes (“Spitsstrook”) in the Netherlands if they are open?
Maybe good to now that theoretically you can be fined for not keeping right in such cases. Unfortunately, many Dutch people don't know how to use a rush-hour-lane.

comment How many hours will it take to drive from Manhattan to Toronto on this “Black Friday” weekend?
I once left by bus from Manhattan to Toronto at 7am on Sunday. Leaving the city went pretty quick, but the border crossing took an hour (this was around 6pm). But that is a regular sunday

Also realize that flying is not always encouraged for pregnant women. As this is more a medical issue, I would also like to encourage you to consult a doctor (if this is a non-hypothetical case)

+1 For the advice to gradually expand on the trips. Maybe, after his first 1000km trip, he does not like it anymore.
