Can a tourist buy a gun in the USA?
Ick. I missed that tag. Well, call it the alternative answer. On the matter of protecting yourself, just keep your eyes open. If you're navigating a major US city and suddenly everybody stops following the most basic of pedestrian/traffic/littering laws and they're all looking at you like you're crazy for being there, it's probably time to turn around. Otherwise, it's just a big country with plenty of room for crazy that you won't see 99.95% of the time if you're not actively looking for it and won't require a gun to protect yourself from.
