comment Kicked out of hotel in morning when booking through booking agency (asked to pay for extra day)
I've also never had a hotel refuse to store my luggage, but in a couple of places (cheaper places in the UK in older buildings) there was no actual space to store them, so they had to be left in the lobby under the hope that most of the time there would be someone at the desk to keep an eye on them. If you'll want to store anything valuable it's best to check ahead.

comment Should I take my own coffee to Japan?
I think the answers are good, but I'd add that it's worth seeking out good local coffee, some of it is excellent. As a general rule (which applies to restaurants as well), if a place looks really old, like it's been there since the 70s, it's likely to be very good. Most places don't last that long, so if it's still here there's probably a reason for it. If you can find "siphon" coffee (brewed by hand using a glass apparatus that looks like something you'd find in a chemistry lab), give it a try.

Thanks, all useful info. (About the data limit thing: I won't use 150MB every day, but this one had a daily limit and I don't think it carries over. A monthly limit would actually be alright, as I will indeed have hotel WiFi a lot of the time - this is just so that I can guarantee that I'll be able to work in the places where I don't have it.)

comment Can I use a power adapter designed for USA in Japan?
Just to confirm for future reference, the international adaptor I mentioned in the question works perfectly in every Japanese socket I've ever came across.
