comment Leaving the US at the end of 90 days
The US actually has procedures for this circumstance. It doesn't sound quite as bad as you make it out to be.

comment Why does a passport have a place of birth field on it?
The GAO studied the possibility of deleting birthplace from US passports in 1987; its report may be enlightening here.

What country issued your passport? What visa, if any, do you have for the US?

comment Any first-hand information on American “chip and no PIN” cards in the U.K.?
Chip and PIN cards aren't expected to be available in the US for a few more years.

You're describing two completely different chips. The EMV chip is a smart card that requires physical contact with a reader; the latter is an RFID/NFC chip which is contactless. They are not compatible.

@VictorySaber Also, the procedure for you is the same for the blue channel or the green channel, but my point is that the procedure for HMRC is different!

comment Heathrow Customs - “Arrivals from the EU” exit
@VictorySaber I'll remind you that just because you were not approached by Customs when walking through, that does not mean you and your luggage were not screened! You can pack a wall full of clever sensors, for instance. Some of them can be seen in the photo I've added to the answer.

comment Heathrow Customs - “Arrivals from the EU” exit
@Relaxed Yes, I'm sure it has mostly to do with the UK's customs and immigration rules. But moving people through the airport quickly is important too!

comment Bringing laptop with US keyboard layout back into the UK
Not long ago I bought a laptop in the US which had the Euro symbol and AltGr keys, neither of which are present on US keyboards. I wouldn't have expected to have similar trouble if I traveled to the EU with it, so +1 for you.
