comment Is it possible to travel around the world using JUST Low-cost carriers?
Norwegian now also serve the US direct from Gatwick, so you could combine the last two legs if you wanted

comment Croatia, passport-free travel: as of 2014, still separate from Schengen Area?
Looks to me like they plan to join the Schengen zone, but haven't yet. What makes you think any different?

comment Alternative route for the shut down Harwich - Esbjerg ferry route by car
There are some Motorail services in Europe, but sadly the wikipedia list suggests none suitable for your planned route

Oh, and one advantage of the Harwich-Hoek ferry is you could leave London after work, drive to Harwich, get a decent night's sleep on the boat, then set off fresh from Hoek the next morning closer to your destination

The bad news is that Seat 61 doesn't suggest any alternatives, which was my first thought of where to chek

comment Car hire credit Card in Ireland
On a global scale they're not too bad - I'd much much rather drive in Ireland than India for example! I just know they cause issues for people used to nice wide roads, and especially people used to wide roads driving on the right, and even more especially people just off an overnight transatlantic flight who are tired + used to driving on the right + used to big wide roads...

Adding your wife would also let her share the driving, so is worth considering from that aspect if nothing else! Driving in Ireland can be tiring, more so than other places, due to the size (or lack thereof) of roads...

comment Can you book hotels on a prepaid credit card worldwide?
I've seen people checking into Hilton hotels before with a large pile of cash for the deposit. I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to do that, then pay on a pre-paid credit card (+ get your deposit returned in cash if you wanted to)

comment How/where to buy mixed-class tickets for a flight?
If it's all within one alliance, the phone sales team of any of the airlines you fly with should be able to sell you it, they're normally used to handling special cases. Travel Agencies exist all over, though in some bits of the world they're in more obvious places than others. Some you'd need to go there in person, some are happy to work on the phone, occasionally some will work by email - that can be very convenient!

@verve Not all hotels will, but some do accept a (fairly large) amount of cash as a deposit if you don't have a credit card. The only time I paid close attention, the guy checking in next to me was staying 2 nights, and was asked to pay for those two nights in cash up front, and leave just over another two nights worth of cash as a deposit. It was all counted out twice, he got a receipt, and presumably got it back at checkout less dinners / drinks / minibar / etc costs he charged to the room
