I'm a Post-Doctoral Fellow in atmospheric remote sensing at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I first came to Stack Exchange for practical reasons: Tex.SE has been of major help when I wrote my licentiate (midterm) thesis. Since then, I have discovered the joy of many websites. As my network profile will show, I'm interested in travel, outdoor, scientific skepticism, and as I work in academia, also in academia and LaTeX.

comment How much extra time should I reserve to enter the US from Canada with the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Bus as a European VWP citizen?
I found two direct buses Toronto - Detroit - Chicago, 01:30–11:30 and 12:30–23:15. The former departs at an unpleasant time, the latter misses my Chicago connection (22:10, next bus is at 06:30). With my current plan, I arrive at Chicago 19:05 with a 3-hour window to catch the next bus. One alternative I am still considering is to take Greyhound from Toronto to Buffalo (20:00 – 22:30), then Amtrak to Chicago (23:59 – 09:45), with a late-morning bus to Iowa. I've checked Greyhound and Megabus, and I'm not aware of any other relevant bus companies for further options.

@Ghost Thanks for the warning. I am living in Canada (work permit) and will be carrying return tickets (likely bus or train) on me. I'd prefer to travel from Detroit by train but trains depart 11:17 and 18:20; one leaves before I arrive at Windsor, and the other arrives in Chicago too late for my connecting bus to Iowa (and the direct train is history). But as a young male on a Saturday afternoon, I'll be fine.

@KateGregory Approximately when was this?

@Blackbird57 Does it make any difference that the bus is local? I don't know the situation at the border, but if I'm through the border while someone else delays the bus, I could simply proceed by taxi, if there are any taxis at this point (I imagine crossing the border by taxi may be difficult).

@GregHewgill Right. I forgot to mention that I actually found this picture when I searched google images for Colorado.

Right. I thought it looked like northern Norway.

comment Boarding a train in the UK at a later calling station, on an advanced purchase (train specific) ticket
You might forfeit your seat reservation if not taking it at the station from which it is booked. Such is the case if your travel would be in Germany.

So one can cross with a bicycle, but not without one? That's funny.

comment Places in the Alps by sunshine duration
@RoflcoptrException Depends for what. Northern Ticino has some of the highest precipitation in the Alps, in particular in spring. Southern Ticino is nicer, but not really in the core of the Alps any more. So for swimming in a near-alpine lake, Ticino is good. For hiking in serious mountains in sunny weather, not so much.

@user11743 Whatever you do, good luck.

@QuoraFeans This question is about preventing being forced to travel somewhere. Although different from the more usual question of asking how to succeed in travel to a place, it is still a travel question, albeit an unusual one. Although it is true that behind this travel-related question lies a much deeper problem, the specifics of forced travel are neither off-topic, nor too localised, and are therefore, in my opinion, welcome to this site.

Could you sit at a library? Do you need internet day and night? (I hesitate whether this question is on-topic here)

This is the most serious question I have ever seen on Stack Exchange. I feel slightly ashamed for initially thinking otherwise, when I had only read the title.
