I got there earlier than I needed to and went from the curb-side drop-off to the gate in about an hour.

comment Does booking directly from an airline improve customer service in resolving problems?
I don't have status with any airline, no. Or at least I've done nothing to seek it; I assume it doesn't happen automatically. I fly pretty infrequently.

I bought the Air Canada ticket through a link on Kayak, but it wasn't from Air Canada directly. So some third-party web-based agent but I no longer remember the details (can look up later). We bought the United tickets through United's web site. (Sorry, didn't mean to leave out important info -- just didn't know what was important!)

Re your edit, I was really trying to focus specifically on the customer-service aspect. I'm not looking for answers about, say, financial benefits like bonus miles for buying direct.

comment How do I get compensation for messed-up flights?
In the end my credit-card company refunded half my money (working with the other bank, not Air Canada), Air Canada disputed, and I had to pay it back six months later. All I got from Air Canada was a voucher that expired in a bit under a year from the original travel date; they would not extend that so I could use it on a later trip (with another carrier in their network, though I didn't say that when I asked). So in the end I got no compensation, just some lessons for what to do differently in the future. (Which are valuable, but I was hoping for more. :-) )

@Karlson yup. Wasn't sure if I should link to that in the question.

Right, it's the visibility I'm concerned about. If I'm going to London, I expect to get wet -- but will I be able to benefit from the London Eye view?

@gerrit ok, maybe not in a year exactly, but I thought we were generally aiming for questions with broader application than "will phone X work in country Y?". But I don't have a lot of experience on this particular site (others on SE yes, but not here), so if y'all think I should ask that I'm happy to.

comment When and where do I have the highest chance of seeing auroras?
I saw another CNN article about this today (which is why I'm here on this question now :-) ). Now I'm wondering if it would be totally crazy to go at the end of next month (when my and my husband's employers both push people to take time off anyway).
