Actually, I believe the requirement in the Schengen area is simply proof of citizenship. A passport is one obvious way to prove citizenship, but not the only one. Some countries' ID cards apparently include information about citizenship (though I can't name specific examples).

@Rudy IIRC Amazon supports both import and export via physical media, although at a cost. I never did look very much into it. If you have huge amounts of data it could be time-effective, but in a travelling situation it's just as easy to mail media to a friend or family member.
